Willenhall Memorial Park was created in the early 1920s to commemorate the many people who died in the Great War. The Park was formed out of 22ha of derelict former mining land to the west of Willenhall Town Centre. Afforestation of the pit mounds was carried out by unemployed servicemen returning from the war.
The resulting woodland is now an attractive backdrop to the Park’s many facilities; which include a bandstand, bowling green, children’s play area, fishing pool and community pavilion.
Adjoining the northwest entrance to the Park is Fibbersley Local Nature Reserve, a 12.89 ha expanse of land on former mine workings that is now a haven for wildlife. Health walks take place three times a week from the park pavilion, and follow a variety of circular trails through the Park and Nature Reserve.
In recent years, Walsall Council has worked closely with the Friends of Willenhall Memorial Park to regenerate the Park and bring its facilities up to date.
The Park offers a varied programme of events and activities throughout the year. Sunday afternoon bandstand concerts during the summer have proved especially popular. Additionally, people can enjoy sports tournaments, fishing contests and an annual fun day.
The park you see today has been carefully developed by Walsall Council in partnership with the Friends of Willenhall Memorial Park planned restoration and regeneration programme which has both restored the parks historic landscape and regenerated its facilities to provide a park to meet the current and future needs of the local community.
This successful transformation of the park and the achievement of the Green Flag Award from 2008 to the present date has come about as a result of a successful partnership between the Friends Group and Walsall Council.
